Palio della Brocca – Deruta

Palio della Brocca is a beautiful and exciting event that is held every year and eagerly awaited by Deruta residents, capable of promoting fun and healthy competition. The Palio is a historical re-enactment of the mid-19th century that takes place between the end of August and the beginning of September. With historical reenactments, ancient challenges, and folkloric shows in the splendid setting of Piazza dei Consoli, the famous city of ceramics takes a leap to the past. The three districts participate in the event - Piazza, Valle and Borgo - each of which has as its reference one of the access gates to the town: Porta di Sant'Angelo for the Rione Piazza, Porta del Cerro for the Rione Valle and Porta Romana for the Rione Village.

One of the most memorable games is Corsa delle Brocche, which begins at the Piazza dei Consoli, crosses all the characteristic Deruta places (both the Valley and the Borgo), and finishes in the Piazza dei Consoli. The participants of the race bring jugs decorated with typical motifs of each district to the race.

Next, there is a competition of Table, the competition consists in transporting of terracotta objects on top of a 2-meter wooden table. Especially complex is the race of the Table on a bicycle, that is, the tour of the square while riding a bicycle with a wooden table filled with terracotta objects. Finally, the Palio della Brocca culminates in an exciting tug-of-war between the various districts in a 3-player minitournament.

It is possible to taste the various typical Umbrian dishes offered at different refreshment points during the festival.
