Olmeto - Marsciano

The small village, which has its access road on the provincial hillside, is a terrace overlooking the Genna valley.

It is part of an interesting thematic trail that leads from Tripoli, where the oldest fresco of "Madonna of Mercy" is preserved, to the church of Madonna delle Grazie in Mercatello, then to the church of Santa Maria Assunta in Pieve Caina, and finally to the church of Madonna della Misericordia in Olmeto.

The parish church of Santa Maria, built in the early 14th century, and the bell tower are the only remnants of the old castle that have been preserved. Inside the church is a splendid tempera on wood panel, the "Madonna of Mercy," referable to the perugian master Mariano di Ser Austerio. Madonna, with her arms extended between angels, welcomes under her mantle the imploring faithful, men and women without the traditional division and with the patrons in the foreground.

The state of preservation of the painting is quite good and its colors not very bright. The iconographic theme of the Lady of Mercy protecting the faithful under her mantle is very recurrent in the area. These artworks were commissioned to appease the wrath of God and were carried out in a limited time span from the last quarter of the 15th century to the first half of the 16th century following the severe pestilential epidemics that struck Perugia and its countryside beginning in 1475.
