The ancient kilns in Deruta

The streets of Deruta are lined with ancient kilns where ceramics were once baked. In the Renaissance period there were 52 kilns located in the ancient village, and the ceramics found in ancient structures indicate that the Deruta production of this period was very varied in quality and techniques.

Right next to the San Michele Arcangelo gate, in Biordo Michelotti street, there is the Ex Fornace Grazia, a completely renovated building now used as a museum and exhibition center, where the Tourist Information Office is located. The name of this ancient kiln comes from its first owners, the Grazia family, who began producing ceramics here in the early 1500s. During the early 1900s, the family moved the production to a new factory outside the town walls where the entire ceramic production cycle is still carried out to this day, from clay processing to firing. The "Ubaldo Grazia Maioliche" Museum is housed at the factory, making it a rare case of a factory-museum.

The ancient furnaces of Baiano is one of the few kilns that has survived to this day. The discovery came by accident during the renovation of the building in the 1980s. Kilns dating back to the 1400-1500s have been found, mysteriously hidden by arches and plaster. Totally restored, they can be seen inside the shop that has belonged to the Baiano family for three generations. The shop opens free to the public and features an exhibition of artistic ceramics produced in Deruta over the years.

In 2008, during the construction of a public parking lot close to the castle walls, where the church of San Salvatore stood until the early twentieth century, a large area of the ancient kilns of San Salvatore was discovered. The kilns can be seen in the Regional Museum of Ceramics, where a tunnel connected ancient kilns to the museum exhibition with over 6000 works created over a period of centuries and with different manufacturing processes.
