he Magione Castle was built in the 12th century as a hospital for pilgrims travelling to Rome or Jerusalem. The production of wine, which began here in the Middle Ages, represents a historical reality of excellence in the area, together with cereals and oil. It was only from the 14th century onwards that the building began to take on the character of a fortress, as the complex was raised. The courtyard surrounded by arches welcomes the visitor who is about to visit the Castle.
In the oldest part of the Castle, there is a chapel dedicated to St John the Baptist, in Romanesque style, inside which are two frescoes by the school of Pinturicchio (16th century).In the Castle, where Pontiffs and sovereigns lived on several occasions, in 1502 the conspiracy hatched by some nobles against Cesare Borgia, the 'dieta alla Magione nel Perugino' mentioned by Machiavelli in 'The Prince', was held.
The historic winery of Castello di Magione (Colli del Trasimeno D.O.C.) together with the Commenda Meniconi Bracceschi in Brufa (Torgiano D.O.C.).Still in Umbria, the no less important wineries of San Giustino di Piccione, San Benedetto di Mugnano, and San Sigismondo in Marsciano.
