The Antico Frantoio Petesse is a family-run organic olive farm with oil mill and agritourism located in the olive groves of the stony Umbrian hills, in the eastern foothills of the Umbra Valley from which the renowned Assisi-Spoleto oil PDO is derived.
Our olive trees grow on difficult terrain. In fact, the hillsides of the Umbrian Valley are very steep, the agrarian soil is shallow, with low fertility and very rich in skeleton and therefore extremely permeable and not very suitable for retaining water for long. The climate, which tends to be continental, places Umbria among the areas at risk for olive cultivation due to the occurrence of winter-spring frosts that can cause even significant damage to the trees.
The variety of olive tree that best adapts to these 'extreme' conditions is the 'Moraiolo', a very rustic and resistant species that characterises the Umbria Assisi-Spoleto PDO. Moraiolo olives produce an oil with special organoleptic characteristics: they are very rich in polyphenols, very important health and antioxidant substances that are at their highest concentration in the fruit when the plant grows in unfavourable conditions such as those in our area.
