Castello delle Forme - Marsciano

Castello delle Forme is situated on a strategic point overlooking the right bank of the Tiber river. The ancient castle existed from XII century, when Barbarossa mentions the church contained therein in his diploma. In the past, it controlled the road that led from Perugia to Rome, famous for the transit of the mules that crossed here to get to capital city.

External to the castle is the parish church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, built in the 16th century and restored several times. Inside the church is a valuable 16th-century fresco depicting Our Lady of the Fountain. Also nice to see: the imposing High Altar and side altars, decorations on the vaults made by Alessandro Micheli da Fabriano in 1926, a baptismal font from 1943 made by the sculptor Biscarini, and Via Crucis in Deruta ceramics.

Located in the vicinity of the church, along the road going up to the village is so-called the Fountain of San Costanzo. The water source was constructed in 1296 by the Perugian magistrates for the exclusive use of the people of Castello delle Forme and San Costanzo delle Abbadesse and had various functions, including supplying drinking water, serving as a laundry, and possibly, when necessary, changing into a drinking trough for animals.

Origins of the castle date back to the 12th century. Among the remains of the ancient castle are its bell tower with clock and part of its massive walls. Inside the city walls there is also a circular well, from the late 1800s, made by a local craftsman, Forasiepi Florido. It is topped by a domed roof with a frieze representing a melon or a pumpkin.
