Food and wine events in Deruta and surroundings

In Deruta the landscape is strongly characterized by the presence of water, fertility and the quality of the soil, which produces excellent products, such as wine and oil.

A good opportunity to taste the oil of these areas is the Oil Festival that is organized in Castelleone in the first week of December, where the oil of local producers is the genuine protagonist. The importance of oil and its benefits had attracted numerous personalities to the town. Famous for the assiduous presence of Gabriele d'Annunzio, poet of Italy and lover of golden liquid, who sings its praises in one of his unforgettable praises.

In the summer, Castelleone organizes the festival called Pasquarosa, which is dedicated to the town's patron Sant Donato. The event is held inside the castle walls and offers the opportunity to taste local products. Typical dishes include Tagliatelle San Donato and the Cannibale - a classic dish of the Deruta culture made with marinated pork and juniper.

At the Wheat Festival in Sant'Angelo di Celle in June, the main course is the birbanti (rascals), a short pasta made with water and flour served with various toppings: truffles, broad beans and speck, scampi, pesto and ricotta.

For the Christmas holidays, there is a tradition of preparing a torciglione cake. The name of this almond-based dessert comes from its spiral form with decorations that resemble snakes.

Easter would not be complete without savory cheesecake, made with some cheeses such as parmesan, pecorino romano, and gruyere and served with local cured meats and red wine from the cellars of Deruta.
