Tour - I borghi delle due valli
Castiglione del Lago lies on a promontory where the Palazzo Ducale, also known as Palazzo della Corgna, stands. It is the only small 'royal palace' in the whole of Umbria that still exists and is in excellent condition. Inside, it preserves beautiful rooms frescoed by Pomarancio and Salvio Savini, the best of which are the Sala Maggiore and the Sala del Trono, which are decorated with mythological subjects executed at the request of Marquis Diomede. We also find 24 chairs of the original Corgnesque furnishings and, on the ground floor, more frescoes with stories of the world upside down and Diana and Callisto, attributed to Salvio Savini. Connected to the Ducal Palace is the Rocca del Leone (Fortress of the Lion), reached by a walkway with loopholes over Lake Trasimeno that is truly impressive. This building has a characteristic triangular shape and is the result of a series of design revisions, starting with that of Frederick II of Swabia and Marquis Ascanio I. Walking around Castiglione del Lago, one notices that there are still the ancient walls that give the town an evocative atmosphere. One can also go in search of the three gates to the town: Perugia, Florence and Siena. Triangular tower, three gates: the number three is very popular in these parts and it is no coincidence. The internal urban layout is based on the number three and was built at the behest of Galeazzo Alessi on studies by Vignola and indications by Ascanio della Corgna.
