Guida - I borghi delle due valli
In Orvieto we will see the superb façade of the Duomo with all the explanations on its history, then we will walk through the historical centre to admire the main monuments (public buildings, squares, towers, traces of the Templars, etc.) and to discover the most characteristic and lesser-known corners. We will enter ancient churches, usually overlooked by tourists but worthy of a guided tour, and we will be able to observe beautiful landscapes from the top of the cliff. The Via Romea, an important pilgrimage route, passed through here, which then continued on to Montefiascone.
In the afternoon we will move on to Montefiascone, the highest town on Lake Bolsena, a blue mirror of water that we will be able to admire from the belvedere, near the Rocca dei Papi, with its garden overlooking the plain of Viterbo and the Cimini mountains on the other side. We then descend to the Piazza del Comune, where we find the well of Urban V and the church of St Andrew. From here we will reach the Renaissance cathedral with its grandiose dome and the crypt below. Finally, we will reach the medieval basilica of St Flavianus, where, amidst monstrous and mocking capitals, we will discover the tomb of Defuk, the character linked to the legend of the famous Est Est wine.
