Guida - I borghi delle due valli
In the morning:
- AMELIA is a very ancient city of the Umbrian people, traditionally founded four centuries before Rome, controlling the Via Amerina. It is still encircled for long stretches by the extraordinary pre-Roman walls known as 'cyclopean'. There are beautiful palaces and churches, such as that of St Francis, with sculptures by Agostino di Duccio, and the cathedral, which has an ancient tower soaring up the hillside, from which one can enjoy a vast panorama. In the market square there is a medieval corner, and in another square is the entrance to the Roman cisterns, impressive hydraulic works of antiquity.
In the afternoon:
- Lugnano in Teverina, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. We will wander through the narrow streets of the medieval village, among small squares and ancient palaces, landscapes of the Teverina Valley, and finally arrive at the collegiate church of S. Maria Assunta, a jewel of Umbrian Romanesque architecture.

Amelia is a very ancient city of the Umbrian people. It is still encircled for long stretches by the extraordinary pre-Roman walls known as 'cyclopean'. There are beautiful palaces and churches, such as that of St. Francis, with sculptures by Agostino di Duccio, and the Duomo, which has an ancient tower next to it on the top of the hill, from which one can enjoy a vast panorama. In the market square there is a medieval corner and, in another square, there is the entrance to the Roman cisterns, impressive hydraulic works of antiquity.
Lugnano in Teverina is a picturesque medieval village, located in a dominant position on the Teverina Valley, on the Umbrian side. It is on the list of the 'Most Beautiful Villages in Italy', and with good reason: one can walk along alleys and stairways that give the flavour of the Middle Ages. The most fascinating monument is the Collegiata di S.Maria Assunta, a church considered a jewel of Romanesque art.
